SAMARAHAN: A total of 535 students from institutions of higher learning in Sarawak have been sent back to their respective destinations on May 1 and 2.

According to a statement from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), the process of sending the students back on Friday (May 1) alone had involved 465 students while yesterday another 70 had been sent home.

“Of the total, 278 students were sent home via air transport, heading to Malaya. Meanwhile, the remaining 257 used land transport to destinations such as Miri, Bintulu, Sarikei, and Betong.”

Unimas is coordinating the transportation logistics for the programme to send students from institutions of higher learning back to other parts of Sarawak, Sabah and Malaya, after they have been staying on campus throughout the movement control order (MCO) since its commencement on March 18.

An officer takes the temperature of one of the students.

“Prior to be allowed to join the programme to be transported back, students will have to undergo a health screening first while their bags will also be sanitised before being brought into the vehicle provided,” said Unimas.

The process of returning the students was also being facilitated by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), which helped to sanitise the bus before the students entered, and also the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), which helped ensure that standard operating procedures (SOPs) such as social distancing and wearing face masks were obeyed at all times.

Throughout the journey home, students would be accompanied by a Unimas liaison officer.

“The students are not allowed to make any changes to their seats in the bus or change their original destination,” it said.
