MULU: Sixty participants took part in a Summer Camp fire safety programme which was held at Mulu National Park and Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa from Sept 25 to 27.

In a press release issued yesterday (Sept 29), Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd (PCSB), a subsidiary of Petronas, will continue to organise its annual corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme to equip local communities in Miri with necessary skills on fire emergency preparedness and response.

PCSB-Sarawak Oil senior general manager Morris Mail said the programme is in line with Petronas’ strategic pillar on education and environment.

During the programme, the participants underwent extensive fire training modules in topics such open burning, how to handle portable fire extinguishers, and kitchen safety.

“Over the last seven years, the annual three-day Summer Camp has helped the communities in the Miri division be better prepared in responding to fire incidents, besides enhancing their awareness on fire and safety prevention,” he said.

He also said that the programme has benefitted some 400 community leaders since 2014.

“We noticed that those who had attended the programme have extended their knowledge to their longhouse members, leading to the establishment of Bomba communities at villages and the provision of fire extinguishers.

“For example, there were incidents at some of the longhouses in Miri were fires were successfully contained because of the locals’ preparedness and readiness.

“Some villagers even bought fire insurance for their longhouses,” he added.
