649 new cases, two deaths on Monday

KUCHING: Sarawak reported an addition of 649 Covid-19 cases on top of another two fatalities on Monday (May 10).

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said the total number of cases now stood at 35,809 with the death toll at 209.

397 or 61.17 per cent of the cases were detected in Sibu, Bintulu, Miri, Selangau and Pakan districts.

“The districts that recorded cases on Monday are Sibu (120), Bintulu (82), Miri (79), Selangau (65), Pakan (51), Kuching (49), Kapit (36), Kanowit (28), Betong (17), Beluru (17), Pusa (15), Subis (14), Belaga (13), Samarahan (12), Sebauh (10), Meradong (eight), Song (five), Bau (four) , Mukah (four), Tatau (four), Matu (four), Saratok (four), Sri Aman (three) and one each in Serian, Limbang, Lundu, Julau and Sarikei.  

“Of the 649 new cases reported, 41 people showed signs and experienced symptoms of Covid-19 infection during screening.”

SDMC said the first death involved a local woman who had received treatment at Sibu Hospital when her rT-PCR screening on April 11 came back positive.

“She was confirmed dead on May 7. The case had high blood pressure.”

The second death involved a local man who had received treatment at Kapit Hospital for respiratory distress.

“The case had been coughing for a week before seeking treatment at the hospital. He tested positive on May 7. He was confirmed dead on May 9. The case had hypertension, dyslipidaemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.”

SDMC also addressed a misreport on the number of cases detected in Bintulu District on Sunday (May 9).

“17 new cases registered under Bintulu District on May 9 should be registered under Tatau District (15 cases) and Sebauh District (two cases).

“Therefore, the actual number of new cases for Bintulu District on May 9 is 48 with Tatau District, 16 and Sebauh District, two.”
