698 new cases raises state’s tally to 45,436

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 698 new positive cases today (May 28), raising the state’s case tally to 45,436.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said 401 of these new cases, or 57.45 percent, were reported in the districts of Sibu, Miri, and Kuching.

They said Sibu District recorded 159 cases, Miri (125), Kuching (117), Bintulu (43), Lubok Antu (39), Bukit Mabong (35), Kapit (33), Samarahan (29), Sri Aman (27), Betong (16), Sarikei (16), Kanowit (11), Song (9), Subis (7), Selangau (6), Mukah (4), Meradong (4), Julau (3), Tatau (3), Daro (2), Saratok (2), Belaga (2), Sebauh (2), Beluru (2), Pakan (1), and Dalat (1).

“Of the 698 new cases reported, 69 people showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection during screening,” they said in a statement on Friday.

They said 513 individuals were those who had been given quarantine orders.

On the breakdown of the 698 new cases, they said 474 were individuals who had contact with positive Covid-19 cases, 134 were from other screenings at health facilities, 51 were from symptomatic individual screenings at health facilities, 38 were linked to existing active clusters, and one case was a person who had returned from another state in Malaysia (Import B).

“Today (Friday), 581 new cases have recovered and been discharged,” said SDMC.

Of these, 144 cases were from Sibu Hospital and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC), Kapit Hospital and PKRC (132), Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and PKRC (88), Bintulu Hospital and PKRC (73), Miri Hospital and PKRC (68), Betong PKRC (22), Sarikei Hospital and PKRC (18), Mukah PKRC (15), Sri Aman Hospital and PKRC (12), and Serian PKRC (9).

“This brings the number of recovered and discharged cases to 37,375 or 82.26 percent of the total number of Covid-19 cases in Sarawak,” said the committee.

They said there were still 7,684 active cases being isolated and treated at hospital wards and PKRCs throughout the state.

“A total of 698 new persons-under-investigation (PUIs) have been reported and no PUIs are awaiting laboratory test results,” said SDMC.
