KULIM: About 70,000 applications were received for the 2019 Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) Form 1 intake as at the closing date on Dec 4, said Rural Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun.
According to Rina the amount was relatively large as only 7,760 places could be offered at 54 schools nationwide.
However , she said, as decided by the new government, beginning with next year’s intake, 65 per cent of the quota should be allocated for students from families in the bottom 40 per cent household income group (B40).
“Registration for the MRSM Form 1 intake will begin on Jan 14 and the application status can be viewed on Dec 21 on the Mara website,” she told reporters after a Back To School programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaaan Taman Mutiara near here, yesterday.
Rina added that for the first time, she had instructed Mara to announce on the application status much earlier to ease parents in preparing their children for the new school year.
A total of 880 students received school aid totalling RM50,000, at the Back To School programme organised by Kedah Regional Development Authority (Keda) in collaboration with MARA Poly-Tech College (KPTM) and Mara Education Foundation (YPM).
Of the total, 280 primary school pupils from Kulim, Sik and Baling districts received school bags, stationery sets, water tumblers as well as RM30 as deposit into their National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN-i) account, courtesy of KPTM and Keda.
