KUALA LUMPUR: The number of new cases of Covid-19 in Malaysia spiked to 7,289 over the past 24 hours, the highest figure ever recorded since the pandemic began in January last year.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in his tweet said Selangor still recorded the highest daily tally at 2,642, followed by Johor (664), Kuala Lumpur (604), Sarawak (513) and Kelantan (425).
Negeri Sembilan recorded 410 new cases, followed by Penang (380), Kedah (336), Terengganu (268), Sabah (266), Melaka (258), Perak (218), Pahang (211), Labuan (63), Putrajaya (23) and Perlis (eight).
Two days ago, the country recorded 6,976 cases of Covid-19.
Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham in a statement said the new cases involved 7,285 local transmissions and four imported cases.
“The imported cases involved one citizen and three non-citizens, while the local transmission cases involved 6,813 citizens and 472 non-citizens,” he said.
A total of 3,789 recoveries were recorded, while active cases now stood at 63,458.
There were 60 fatalities recorded over the past 24 hours, including a three-year-old girl in Sabah, bringing the death toll due to the coronavirus to 2,369.
He said 726 patients were currently in the intensive care unit with 373 requiring respiratory support.
Dr Noor Hisham said there were 15 new clusters detected today, 10 of which were workplace clusters, four community clusters and one religious cluster.
The workplace clusters are Tapak Bina Persiaran Setia Dagang (Selangor); Jalan Enam Selatan 1A (Selangor); Jalan Cemerlang Elektrik (Johor); Tasek Raja (Kelantan); Jalan Segambut Lentang (Kuala Lumpur); Perusahaan Maju Enam (Penang); Dah Charok Bemban (Kedah); Kalabakan Selatan (Sabah); Industri Kledang Satu (Perak); and Sungai Isap Perdana (Pahang and Selangor).
As for community clusters, they are the Jalan Tahir Manan (Selangor); Jalan Dato Permaisuri (Sarawak); Jalan Selendang and Jalan Sekuntum (Johor); while the religious cluster detected is the Desa Pinggiran Putra in Selangor.
“The latest development brings the cumulative clusters to 2,060 with 577 still active,” he said. Dr Noor Hisham also said that 1,483 clusters had ended as of yesterday. – Bernama
