73 arrested by Mukah police for playing cards and taking part in cockfighting

MUKAH: Police here nabbed 73 individuals for playing cards and taking part in a cockfighting session on Friday (Feb 4).

The raid, conducted by Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Mukah CID, took place near an open barn at KM114, Jalan Balingian-Mukah around 12.20 pm.

Sarawak CID chief SAC Lukas Aket, in a statement, disclosed that the team found 70 men and three women playing cards and participating in the cockfighting session.

“Once they realised the presence of police in the area, all the suspects attempted to flee but failed as they were quickly arrested.

“Police also managed to seize RM219,211 cash, 212 chips worth RM1,026,850, a set of cards, 10 live chickens, three dead chickens, three spur knives, a weighing scale, two notebooks and a whiteboard.

“All the suspects, aged between 15 and 75, were brought to the police station for further action,” said Lukas.

He added that the case was being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1962 and Section 7 (2) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953.

The public are strongly advised not to be involved in any illegal gambling activities as they could a lot of financial and social problems.
