800 tree saplings planted in college CSR programme

BAU: About 62 staff and students of Kolej Komuniti Mas Gading (KKMG) planted tree saplings as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) at Sabal Agroforestry Centre in Simunjan recently.

According to a press release,about 800 tree saplings were planted during the programme which was led by KKMG director Shirley Philip.

Shirley said the programmes sought to give exposure to the students about landscape elements.

“Exposure to unique and rare plants should be highlighted in landscape education from the certificate level.

“In addition, this CSR will also provide the students with hands-on experience to be in the industry in the future,” said Shirley.

Meanwhile, representing Sarawak Forest Department, Rohanie Bohan, said the Greening Malaysia Programme through the 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign (2021-2025) launched by the federal government, the department as the campaign coordinator has rebranded the programme to Greening Sarawak Campaign by expanding the scope of planting and coordinating planting in other areas such as state land areas, urban areas, schools and many others.

“Under this campaign, Sarawak has targeted to plant 35 million trees within five years. Since  2021, Sarawak has managed to record the highest number among the states in Malaysia with 21,091,996 trees.

“To ensure the success of this programme, the department is also intensifying cooperation with various parties such as corporate parties, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), local communities and others.

“The response from government or private agencies, corporate parties, NGOs and the general public in the implementation of the Sarawak Greening programme and forest landscape restoration (FLR) is very encouraging. In fact, we also receive funds from the corporate side for tree planting activities as one of their CSR programmes” said Rohanie.

Also present were KKMG Head of Landscape Certificate Programme Nor Akma Shukor and other KKMG lecturers and staff.

KKMG is a public institution of higher learning (IPT) under the Ministry of Higher Education that offers a full-time programme for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) graduates namely Landscape Certificate and Information Technology Certificate over a study period of two years. At the end of this course, students will also have the opportunity to continue their studies to the diploma level at polytechnics.
