KUCHING: Snatch thieves are getting bolder. Even schools are not safe from them.

A sister of a student of Chung Hua Middle School here fell victim to a snatch thief who had the audacity to coolly enter the school compound and snatch a cell phone from the victim.

The perpetrator, who had a full-face helmet on, boldly rode into the compound of the school in Jalan Tun Razak and tried to make away with the cell phone.

In the 2.30pm incident on Monday, the 21-year-old victim was injured after being dragged for a few metres.

She was waiting in the school compound to pick up her sister when she was surprised by the culprit, who grabbed her cell phone and dashed to his motorcycle parked in the compound.

The brave victim gave chase and managed to grab hold of his shirt as the snatch thief rode on.

The victim seeking treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital.

She sustained injuries to her wrists, elbows and knees.

The pain from the injuries forced her to let go of the thief near the school gate.

However, the victim managed to get back her cell phone and the school authorities sent her to the Sarawak General Hospital for treatment.

At the time of the incident, there was no security guard and the school gate was wide open.

The incident was also caught on the school’s closed-circuit television.

Chung Hua Middle School principal Lee Zhi Peng said this was the second time that the same culprit had entered the school compound to rob.

He said the first time was before the Chinese New Year when some students were playing basketball and left their belongings at the shed.

The same man on the same motorcycle rode in, grabbed the students’ belongings before riding away.
