9,092 Sibu business premises inspected

SIBU: The Enforcement Division of Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) Sibu Branch inspected a total of 9,092 business premises, including 7,425 premises in urban areas and 1,667 premises in rural areas last year.

Stating this in a media statement here on Thursday, KPDNHEP Sibu branch head Kelyn Bolhassan @ Haliward said throughout last year, a total of 168 cases were recorded and confiscation of goods with a total value of RM287,233.40 was made by the Enforcement Division.

He said out of this number, 36 cases were for violation under the Weights and Measures Act 1972, 49 cases under Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, 70 cases under Infectious Diseases Control and Legalisation Act 1988 (Act 342), seven cases under Control of Supply Act 1961, three cases under Trade Description Act 2011, one case each under Consumer Protection Act 1999, and Direct and Anti-Pyramid Sales Act 1993.

Meanwhile, he also disclosed that last year based on data gathered from the branch’s Complaints Management Unit, a total of 100 complaints were received, out of which 48 were on online transactions, 18 on pricing, 13 on misleading service, eight on motor vehicle workshops, three on misleading advertisement, three complaints about false trading and two complaints on scratch and win.

Others were one complaint each on price control item; weight and measure; direct sales; hire purchase vehicle; and counterfeit goods.

Kelyn reminded the public to be cautious when making online transactions.

“The consumers need to ensure a ‘market place’ or online sales site is safe before making any purchase. Besides, they are also advised not to be easily fooled by scratch and win activities offered by certain individuals by offering lucrative prizes to deceive the public.

He also urged the public who come across any misconduct by traders to report to the KPNDHEP through the following channels.
