KUCHING: A total of 93 flood victims in Lawas have returned to their respective homes after taking shelter at Trusan Community Hall due to flood.

According to Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director Khirudin Drahman, it was safe for them to return following a situation report done in the morning.

“We will inform the Lawas District officer cum Lawas District Disaster Level chairman to close the centre.

“After discussing with the Civil Defence Force (JPAM) and Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), we will be sending the victims back to their houses at noon,” he said earlier.

“We will be monitoring the (river) water level in case it increases again, to ensure that it is completely safe before suggesting to close down the temporary centre.”

Meanwhile, Sarawak Disaster Management Committee secretariat chief Maj (PA) Ismail Mahedin said the flood victims comprised 30 adults, 52 children, three babies and eight senior citizens.

“They are from eight villages in the district affected by flood.

“The villages are Kg Seberang Kedai Trusan, Kg Gelapas, Kg Perumahan Gelapas, Kg Masjid Trusan, Kg Luagan Kelilang, Kg Tengah Trusan, Kg Lintang and Kg Berjumpa Sundar,” he said.

In Miri, water levels have risen more than a foot in Kampung Long Bemang, Baram.

The weather was clear as at yesterday while the water levels had gone up by two inches due to the nearby Sungai Tutoh.

A longhouse with 100 rooms and 600 residents, located downstream and situated near a school, was flooded. However, the residents were not severely affected and were still able to go about their daily routines.
