OYA: Restoration works on the Batang Oya riverbank corridor here finally began last Tuesday after it was delayed for over a year.

Tender for the RM4 million project was recently handed over to the successful contractor by the Minister for Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah who is also Dalat assemblywoman.

The 200m-long corridor, to prevent river erosion, is expected to be completed by July, 2020 and will link to Pekan Sabtu Oya waterfront.

According to Pekan Sabtu Oya chairman Arini Suhaili, the people of Oya are very happy and grateful because the project has finally become a reality.

“Upon completion, this corridor will provide a new landscape in Pekan Sabtu Oya.

“Hopefully, it will also improve the economy of the local population so that Pekan Sabtu Oya can become a hub for economic development and a recreation centre for the surrounding population,” he explained.

According to him, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg will officiate at the launch of a 60km-long artificial reef balls built along Kuala Igan to Oya on October 1.
