Lovers escape mandatory hanging

GEORGE TOWN: Two lovers were spared the hangman’s noose when the High Court here acquitted them of two drug-trafficking charges yesterday.

Judicial commissioner Datuk Ahmad Shahrir Mohd Salleh decided to free local Lim Beng Hock, 51, and his Vietnamese girlfriend, Nguyen Thi Mong Tien, 30, after the prosecution failed to make out a prima facie case against the two accused.

In the first charge, Lim and Nguyen were jointly accused of trafficking heroin weighing 3278.1g at Kondominium N Park, Jalan Batu Uban, Batu Uban at 12.05am on July 31 2015.

In the second charge, they were jointly accused of trafficking methamphetamine, weighing 1035.11g at the same place, time and date.

Lim and Nguyen were charged under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 read together with Section 39B(2) of the same Act which provides for the mandatory death sentence.

Eleven witnesses were called to the stand throughout the hearing. Prosecuting was deputy public prosecutor Irwan Suainbon while the two accused were defended by lawyers Hussaini Abdul Rashid and Benjamin Tan Yi Bin.  – Bernama
