KUCHING: The proposal to establish direct flight routes between various cities in Indonesia, including popular destinations like Bali, Surabaya, and Medan, and Sarawak, has gained enthusiastic public support.
The Sarawak government recently concluded discussions with two Indonesian airlines to add direct flight options connecting the neighbouring country to Sarawak.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries, and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah announced on Monday (August 28) that if the service is offered, it could be a feeder flight for the Borneo Umrah Hub departing from Kuching, scheduled to start next month.

The direct flights can offer travellers time savings and convenience for travellers, as long layovers can be eliminated. By removing long layovers, these flights can offer passengers considerable time savings and enhanced convenience, especially for business travellers or those with mobility issues. Travellers to and from Sarawak can also save on expenses and provides productive travel experience. This will make Sarawak a favourable choice for travellers.

I view this initiative as a progressive step for the Sarawak Government, aligning seamlessly with the Post-COVID 19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 tourism sector objectives. With more flights coming into Sarawak, there will be positive socio-economic impacts such as employment opportunity and cross-cultural exchange where we can share and spread awareness on the uniqueness of Sarawak.
Hoping that these invitations are heavily considered and the routes would open in the future for the convenience. This would reduce the hassles of connected flights and more enjoyment throughout the travel. While focusing on this endeavour, neighbouring countries could take the opportunity to propose reciprocal flight routes, enhancing travel options for our region.
I full support this initiative, as it has the potential to diversify the range of regional tourism destinations. In addition, it can also increase the state’s economic growth with the arrival of tourists from outside Sarawak.
