LABUAN: The Labuan Football Association (LAFA) is gearing up to revolutionise football on this duty-free island.

LAFA president Sophian Said said a series of initiatives aimed at elevating the island’s sporting landscape, encompassing football tournaments for people of all ages and genders.

He said with a clear vision of nurturing talent and fostering a passion for football, LAFA is determined to make Labuan a hub for sports enthusiasts.

“We are committed to promoting football as a vehicle for personal growth and community development. LAFA will continuously organise football tournaments, welcoming participants of all ages and genders,” he told Bernama today.

One of the most anticipated events on LAFA’s calendar is the Labuan Women Football Open, which will take place from Feb 1-4 next year.

Sophian said this tournament, to be held in conjunction with the Federal Territory Day 2024 celebrations, would feature top talents from Labuan, as well as players from Sabah and Sarawak.

The prestigious Datuk Wira Dr Ramli Tahir Trophy will be up for grabs, adding an extra layer of excitement to the competition, he said.

In a show of unity and collaboration, LAFA is teaming up with Labuan Corporation, the Youth and Sports Department, and the Labuan Youth Council to ensure the success of the Labuan Women Football Open.

This partnership underscores the commitment of various local entities to empower the island’s sporting community.

Sophian also encouraged all sports enthusiasts to actively participate in LAFA’s football scouting programmes, emphasising that they play a crucial role in identifying and nurturing talent that can one day represent Labuan on the national and international stage. –  BERNAMA
