KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system is set to revolutionise urban transportation with its Transit Signal Priority (TSP) which will ensure the ART gains priority at traffic lights, granting it a seamless flow through intersections without disruptions.
State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said this at a press conference after visiting the ART Proof-of-Concept site at La Promenade Mall on Wednesday (Dec 6).
He said the implementation of TSP marks a significant stride towards efficient and uninterrupted public transportation in urban areas.
Lee added that the precise timing from one destination to another is a key feature of the ART system, ensuring accuracy in arrival times.
“This reliability is essential for users to be informed about the expected arrival time, especially in cases where traditional cars might face delays in traffic.
“To prioritise the route and uphold safety standards, ART has established regulations. Despite being an autonomous system, a driver is present to take measured actions in situations like cars running a red light, emphasising the commitment to safety.
“Additionally, when approaching intersections, the ART vehicle will intentionally reduce speed, showcasing a comprehensive safety approach,” he said.
He said the ministry is currently collecting data on the performance of ART ever since its operation of approximately 6,000km from last October.
“At the end of the month, the data and feedback received will be sent to the factory that produces the train. We will also make some changes to the design, what was seen today is only a proof-of-concept.
“This proof of concept consists of two phases. The first phase was in China when it was completed in the factory.
“After that, in Kuching, we assembled everything and started the second phase in September,” he said.
