MUKAH: Tellian assemblyman Yussibnosh Balo called on locals to always cherish and appreciate Malaysia Day.

He said although there were two historic national dates to remember and commemorate annually, both have their own significance.

He added while Aug 31 is Hari Kebangsaan (National Day), Sept 16 is Hari Malaysia (Malaysia Day).

“However, previously Aug 31 was regarded as Hari Kemerdekaan until some years ago it was changed to the present name,” he said when launching Ziarah Ukas — Semarak Kemerdekaan at Kampung Judan community hall here yesterday (Sept 11).

The former Balingian assemblyman also urged the young generation to understand the history and meaning of both historic national dates, so that they would not be misled.

He then congratulated Mukah MP Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib on her reappointment as Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs).

He hoped that Hanifah would also help Sarawak in matters pertaining to Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), which the state is currently negotiating with the Federal government involving some of the latter’s eroded rights.

Penghulu Murad Ibrahim and community leader Hazemi Mirad also attended the event.
