KUCHING: Sarawak’s economy must be modern as it will create an environment where opportunities are available for its youths, says Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said with a solid economy, Sarawakians working outside of the state would be attracted to work in the state.
“In short, our economy must be modern, this will give opportunities for the youths as what they have learned is not the same to what we have learned in our generation and I see our future is bright,” he said in an exclusive interview with New Sarawak Tribune.
Abang Johari said to achieve this, Sarawak must be politically stable as its image to outsiders must be protected.
“Secondly, we must leverage on the expertise possessed by the newer generation in new fields.
“Now we have a lot of ongoing development – Sarawak Metro is developing our Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART), where we have our Sarawakians returning to work with us. Same goes for Petrochem.
“Next, we need to promote agriculture as it is a sector of economy which is giving huge returns.”
On future initiatives, Abang Johari said he was looking to implement better connectivity in rural areas for the benefit of schools and the community in the state’s interior.
“It is too early for me to announce it now, but I promise I will introduce it in the near future. This will identify the places that can be equipped with WiFi and Internet in the rural areas and if this happens, it (the initiative) will be expanded.
“This will happen in 2021 and it (better connectivity) will provide an environment where the people are connected.”
