KANOWIT: This riverine town will soon have its own waterfront said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
In announcing this, he said a sum of RM3 million has been approved for the purpose following a request from Machan assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong.
He said the state government would also build a road together with a bridge linking Ulu Machan to the rest of Kanowit.
“Twice in one month I have received requests from your elected representative, one is a road and bridge. So, under the Upper Rajang Development Agency (Urda), we will develop a road leading to Ulu Machan.
“I said to the Urda deputy chairman (Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi), we will also build a bridge along with the road. The second request was for a waterfront in Kanowit.
“This will be implemented by the Kanowit Distrct Council, together with this, there will be other infrastructure projects to follow,” he said when officiating at Nanga Machan Agricultural office here today.
Abang Johari said it was only three weeks ago that Kanowit asked for an extension to its market as the hawkers need a bigger place for their business.
“I have approved the project and the fund has been given to the district council,” he said.
Abang Johari said with a better road available to connect Kanowit to Sibu, through Urda, various other infrastructure projects would be implemented.
“This includes better water and electricity facilities. I have allocated RM1.5 billion to Urda to develop the upper Rajang area.
“As you can see, there are now various infrastructure projects implemented in the Batang Rajang areas, Kapit is now having traffic jams due to construction, same goes for Kanowit and Song,” he said.
