CYBERJAYA: Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has dropped a hint that Agrobank, a government-owned bank, may be headed by a woman.

Speaking at a strategic collaboration forged between Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN), SME Bank Group and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) here yesterday, he touched on the empowerment of women under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government as many were appointed to lead and head local banks.

He said today was the first time he met new BSN chairman Rossana Annizah Rashidi, who was appointed to the post on Feb 1, 2020.

Lim also mentioned the names of women appointed to the top management of banks and government agencies, including Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd chairman Datuk Zaiton Mohd Hassan, Maybank chairman Datuk Mohaiyani Shamsudin and MDEC chief executive officer Surina Shukri.

“This shows that we’ve made the appointments not based on personal relationships but on the merits and capabilities shown,” he said.

On Agrobank, Lim hinted that a woman might head the bank, for which its current covering president / chief executive officer is Khadijah Iskandar.

“(For) Agrobank, let’s wait. Agrobank may also have one (a woman), so let’s wait.

“But the most important thing… we can see TPM (deputy prime minister) is a woman. One day the PM (prime minister) may be a woman but before that maybe a woman needs to become finance minister first,” he said. – Bernama
