KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg launched the Kuching Zero Kilometre (KM0) Monument to commemorate the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) Sarawak’s golden jubilee.

The monument is set to become a defining landmark in Kuching, symbolising the heart of the city.

RISM Sarawak chairman Sharlene Toh said the monument is significant in restoring a piece of forgotten history and honouring the indispensable role of surveyors in mapping the landscape.

“It symbolises the integral role of surveyors in surveying and measuring our landscape,” she said during the RISM Sarawak 50th anniversary gala dinner at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night.

Standing at two metres tall and three metres wide, the structure resembles two cats holding a 0 KM sign.

A a statement from RISM Sarawak said close collaboration with local authorities has been underway to pinpoint the ideal location for the Kuching KM0 Monument.

Options include Jalan Gambier at the Kuching Waterfront or near the historic Kuching post office building.

The KM0 Monument, a traditional marker denoting a central point from which distances are measured, holds significance akin to the famed Milliarium Aureum of the Roman Empire, which epitomised the saying ‘All roads lead to Rome’.
