SPAOH: A RM30 million bridge will be built here, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during his working visit today.

“This new bridge has become necessary because the existing bridge cannot bear the weight of heavy vehicles including fire trucks.

“Previously, there was a plan for the bridge, but I insisted that the people here deserve a better one, so we upgraded it.

“This bridge will cost RM30 million although the tendered cost is less than that,” he said.

On his working visit, the chief minister said the purpose was to get a briefing on developments carried out in Betong division.

“For Spaoh, we will plan various projects that will transform the area for the better,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who spoke earlier, said the bridge costs RM26.75 million.

“The offer letter for the Sungai Paku Bridge at Jalan Tanjung Sebekut will be handed over today.

“I would like to point out that the chief minister insisted that Spaoh must have a better bridge. That is why he approved a total of RM30 million for it although the tender amount is RM26 million.

“The bridge project will be implemented by the Public Works Department (JKR) and its construction is scheduled to start next month.

“It will take 30 months to build the bridge and should be completed by the end of 2023,” he said.
