KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has advised against putting out best wishes in newspapers for his 72nd birthday, which falls on Aug 4 (Thursday).

The Premier’s Office in a statement said this would allow well-wishers to save money in light of the current tough economic situation and growing inflation rate.

“The Premier understands that friends and well-wishers have expressed their intentions to place advertisements in newspapers to congratulate him on the occasion of his birthday on Aug 4.

“While he appreciates their well-meaning intention, he would not like them to spend on such advertisements in view of the current tough economic situation,” said a statement issued today. “Nevertheless, he would like to thank all well-wishers for their kind thoughts.”

Last year, Abang Johari made a similar request, asking those who wished to place such advertisements to channel the funds to the Sarawak Covid-19 Disaster Trust Fund instead.

Abang Johari was born on Aug 4, 1950 in Limbang. He is the youngest son of Sarawak’s first Governor, the late Tun Abang Openg Abang Sapiee.
