THE Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts has allocated RM15,950,612 to support 74 local and international events as of May this year.

Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said his ministry continues to receive applications for supporting grants and these requests will be considered based on criteria.

“In the film category, the film Sumpahan Jerunei (Burial Pole) which received a support grant from my ministry in 2019 is set to be screened on July 27 in cinemas.

“The storyline is based on the ancient Melanau practice of sacrifice during 13th century Borneo,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech in the State Legislative Assembly today.

Abdul Karim said a few international events that have been confirmed this year include the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), Asean International Film Festival and Awards, 9th Edition Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta 2023, Sarawak Regatta, and Borneo Jazz Festival.

“My ministry also works with the Divisional Tourism Task Groups (DTTG), local councils and local organisations to support local tourism, arts and culture events.

“Each DTTG has also been allocated supporting funds to create video contents for their Sarawak 60 Years Independence Digital Exhibition and celebrations,” he said.

Earlier, Abdul Karim said his ministry has been facilitating events and festivals organised by various agencies through its grants.

“These events attract in-bound visitors and generate economic spin offs for the local community besides creating visibility for international media attention.”

Last year, his ministry supported a total of 128 events and festivals throughout the state with a total grant disbursement of RM 31,568,549.

On another note, he said that the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) has planned 55 marketing initiatives with the objective of conversion and growth through participation in domestic and international trade and consumer fairs and product update roadshows.
