KUCHING: Sarawak Community Policing Association (SCPA) is of the view that some parts of the law stated in Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) should be changed or abolished.

Its chairman Datuk Dr John Lau said he supports the views of Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo on the amendment or abolishment of any law that is oppressive and draconian in nature.

Lau said that in Article 8 (1) of the supreme law of Malaysia (Federal Constitution of Malaysia) stated that all persons are equal before the law and entitled to the equal protection of the law. And a person is innocent before being proven guilty before the Court of Law.

“Detaining a suspect without trial is against equality, moreover, Article 10 of the federal constitution allows freedom of speech, assembly and association,” he said.

He said that it is good to learn that the federal government is thinking about abolishing oppressive and draconian law in the country.

“SCPA believes that the law should treat every citizen equally. The people should not be differentiated by colour or ethnic background or association,” he pointed out.
