KUCHING: The absence of Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh from the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) has drawn the ire of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) backbenchers.

Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Idris Buang said Wong, who was a second finance minister for 15 years, did not need to pull such a stunt and be over-judgmental of the state government’s capability as he was familiar with the state’s way of raising money.

“Sarawak has steady sources of revenue with one being the state sales tax (SST). The SST law has existed for donkey years, but why is it only now that the government became active in demanding payment not only from Petronas but also other oil and gas industry players?

“When you (Wong) were there for 15 years, what did you do to increase revenue for the state? Now that he’s out, he just criticises the government?” he told the media at a press conference at DUN building, yesterday.

He further said that Wong also did not need to be judgmental of the state government because with its system, mechanism and other things in place now … Wong was part of it.

Echoing Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang’s remarks, he opined that Wong should have been present to support the state government especially when the GPS was doing it for the betterment of the people.

“Wong should not turn his back on the people and more or less, not do anything for them. He is not a gentleman, I thought the man was,” he said.

Jemoreng assemblyman Datuk Murshid Diraja Dr Juanda Jaya was also disappointed with Wong for his absence.

“We fulfilled the requirement of the State Constitution, did our job as members of the House and approve the supplementary Bills. However, it seemed that Wong and his party do not care.

“We know the additional allocation of RM2.55 billion for the Bantuan Khas Sarawakku Sayang (BKSS) packages were to be distributed to the people. But it is ironic that PSB who claimed to fight for Sarawakians, do not even want to be present at the august House.
