KOTA PADAWAN: Clan associations and women bureaus should plan their activities in tandem with changes in the modern era.

Assistant Minister of Transportation Datuk Dr Jerip Susil reminded that it was important for such associations to plan and organise activities which could transform the community towards better living.

“Problems and issues affecting the community including those involving youths must be tackled effectively,” Dr Jerip said when he officiated at the Kampung Gerung Women Association dinner held at a restaurant in Kota Padawan on Saturday.

He also urged the Bidayuh community, especially women, to adapt to changes brought about by modernisation.

“Women’s bureaus and clan associations also need to enhance the spirit of togetherness and unity among villagers and strengthen the spirit of working together.

“There is also the need for these organisations to play a role in the welfare of villagers and members, as well as encouraging entrepreneurship and income generating activities among them,” Dr Jerip said.

He also highlighted on the drug abuse problem affecting Bidayuh youths, which he said needed to be tackled quickly and effectively.

He noted that the number of Bidayuh youths arrested for drug-related activities had increased and it was worrying.

“Drugs can destroy our community if it is not checked,” he warned.

He urged Bidayuh youths to join the territorial army (askar wataniah) which could help instill discipline in them.

He also called on successful Bidayuh youths not to forget their roots and to return and serve their community whenever necessary.
