SIBU: Businesses here not listed under essential services have been advised to adopt new ways to survive.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting, during a live broadcast on SMC’s website, talked about business operations and the conditional movement control order (CMCO) enhanced standard operating procedures (SOPs) in Sibu division today.

He said with the extension of the CMCO until May 17, the enhanced SOPs would also apply during the period as approval from the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) had been obtained.

“Previously, the CMCO enhanced SOPs were only imposed until May 10 but SDMC has announced that it will be extended until May 17 following the worrying Covid-19 situation.

“This means, we in Sibu, including Selangau and Kanowit districts, are under the CMCO enhanced SOPs.

“I know this affects a lot of people, especially businesses not listed under essential services.”

He hoped that such businesses could find another way to continue.

“For example, do business according to the new norm now, which is online. Do something creative to promote your product. Don’t give up.

“I understand your situation but the implementation of the CMCO enhanced SOPs is our effort in combating Covid-19.”

Ting said traders at Sibu Central Market, who had been losing almost 99 percent of their businesses, are turning into new ways to go on.

“They put their vegetables, fish and meat in grocery stores to be marketed and they don’t go to the central market anymore.

“This is a new approach that is very effective as people now don’t want to go to crowded places.

He again urged such businesses to persevere and use new approaches. “We don’t know when the situation will improve. So, be prepared to use a new way. There is no other way.”
