MIRI: Police detained a 28-year-old drug addict for allegedly pouring water into two automated teller machines (ATM) of a bank in Jalan Merbau here causing them to malfunction on Thursday (Dec 31).

The man was detained around 5pm by a team of CID personnel after he was caught on the bank’s CCTV, behaving suspiciously while patronising the bank earlier that day.

Act caught on CCTV.

A check on the bank’s CCTV footage saw the suspect entering the premises between 5.40am and 5.50am Thursday morning and standing close to the two machines in a suspicious manner while holding a bottle of mineral water.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the man had wanted to bank in RM3 into the machine but was denied.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted to being involved in drugs since he was 16.

Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari, when contacted, confirmed the arrest.

The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief.
