KUCHING: The Sarawak government has allocated an additional of RM16.4 million to further assist the less fortunate in the state during the movement control order (MCO).

The assistance is in addition to the RM1.15 billion Sarawakku Sayang Special Aid Package announced by the state government recently.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the assistance would be used to purchase food for the needy, homeless, urban poor and rural folk including those who had lost their jobs.

“We have agreed to increase the allocation, and this is particularly for us to help those, especially in the rural areas,” he told a press conference after visiting Ta Kiong supermarket at the Spring shopping mall yesterday.

Abang Johari said the allocation of the assistance would be monitored by respective State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) throughout Sarawak.

“We will seek the ministers who are appointed by SDMC to monitor it,” he said.

Abang Johari added the food distribution by helicopters to the rural areas required the assistance of the army and all costs would be borne by the state government.

Abang Johari said judging from his visit to Ta Kiong and Mydin Supermarket in Petra Jaya earlier yesterday, there was sufficient supply of food during the MCO period.

He added that the government encouraged all supermarkets and convenience stores to have one month’s supply of stocks of basic commodities.
