KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak has urgently called upon the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to address the deteriorating drains along Lorong 2C2 in Tabuan Laru.

Michael Kong, who is also special assistant to DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, said this following the collapse of the concrete drain wall at the area, resulting in an obstruction to the discharge of water and leading to flash floods during rainy seasons.

“The residents here have been voicing their concerns about this issue since 2022, directly notifying MBKS about the collapsed drain wall affecting their back lanes.

“This neglect has led to the formation of a stagnant pond, which has in turn become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

“Moreover, the exposed ground has also eroded over time and there is now a hole due to this soil erosion. Monitor lizards have also made this hole their home and this has become a worry for the residents here,” he said in a statement.

Kong further said that there have been no construction efforts for the back lanes at Tabuan Laru.

“It is unacceptable that MBKS does not take the residents’ complaints seriously and take immediate action. Therefore, what the residents here are asking for is not excessive but merely for their basic infrastructure to be taken care of.

“Enough with the excuses and pushing of blame especially when these back lanes are under the responsibility of MBKS and the Ministry of Public Health, Local Government and Housing,” he added.
