Wisma Melayu Sarawak

KUCHING: The upcoming Wisma Melayu Sarawak (WMS) project in Petra Jaya has received a huge thumbs-up from the local community.

The idea to construct a Sarawak Malay landmark, envisioned by the late former Chief Minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, has now been realised with the earth-breaking ceremony for WMS on Thursday.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated at the event, which was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan; State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar; Assistant Minister of International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, and other dignitaries.

It was indeed a historic moment not just for the Malay community but for Sarawak’s united and plural society as a whole.

New Sarawak Tribune spoke with several attendees at the ceremony to hear their thoughts on the monumental project.

This marks a new era for the Malay community because, with the development of this building, we can do more for the community. We are very proud as today is indeed a historical moment for us as Malays. We hope this building will bring further progress for the all the Malays of Sarawak.

WMS will be a platform of diverse opportunities ans also a meaningful establishment for the Malay community here. Not only will it be the nexus for Sarawakian Malays to gather and exchange ideas, but it will also allow better involvement in building the future for the next generation. This place will push Malays to learn, share, and prosper equally with other fellows Sarawakians towards a beneficial common goal; solidarity.

As a Malay, I am very proud. The design concept is indeed very unique and suitable for the Malay community because it is based on the tengkolok which is a trademark that represents the Malays. With WMS, the Malay community will benefit greatly from the many possibilities and facilities that will available upon the completion of WMS.

This new building is very promising in terms of providing a better future for the public as a whole. As the premises alone represents the Malay persona and essence, then various artistic, religious, and other multicultural activities will eventually be carried out here because as Sarawakians, we are united and I hope we can learn to strengthen our unity even more with new WMS building
