LABUAN: Labuan Liberty Port Management Sdn Bhd (LLPM), the operator of the sole containerised port of Labuan Liberty Wharf, has called for the adoption of preventive practices in order to minimise accidents.
“Being a port operator, we urge the employees in the port industry and port users to be in full compliance of the safety and security requirements of the International Ship and Port Security Code (ISPS Code) and the Restricted Area and Place under the 298 Act 1959, whenever they are in the port area,” chief executive officer Datuk Seri Mohd Alias Abd Rahman said at the closing of a seminar on safety and security awareness at the wharf at Tiara Hotel here today.
Mohd Alias, who is also Labuan Chamber of Malay Entrepreneurs (DUML) president, said port users and port employees must be guided to fully understand the wharf’s safety and security requirements.
He stressed that organisations are legally responsible for establishing and maintaining a working environment where employees are able to work safely, without risk to their physical and psychological health and welfare.
“Likewise, employees are obliged to comply with any legislative requirements and organisational policies and procedures, work in accordance with agreed safe work practices, and use all means provided to protect their health and safety,” he said.
He added that employer and employee health and safety responsibilities are often prescribed in legislation and supported by regulations, codes of practice and standards.
“The security issue is not solely the responsibility of the government but also of those in the port industry,” he said.
He noted that the Labuan Port Authority (LPA) is in the midst of upgrading the wharf to meet security and safety requirements, specifically for the container yard, cargo warehouse, machinery pathway and security fence, amid the growing number of cargo and container operations.
He said the lighting system at the container yard area had been upgraded and a proposal to construct pedestrian walkways for port users and employees would be submitted to LPA for consideration. – Bernama
