KUCHING: Schools in the state are advised to give briefings to their students on the standard operating procedure (SOP) that they need to adhere to when they reopen.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said this was to ensure that students could adapt to the new practices in their schools.

“When classes resume, schools can give constant short reminders on the SOP that students need to adhere to continually,” she told New Sarawak Tribune when contacted yesterday.

She said this could be followed up by reminding the students on the one-metre social distancing, washing or sanitising hands before classes begin in the morning, after break time and before classes end.

“As they get used to the SOP, the reminder can be done once a day,” she said.

The school reopening management guidelines has been released by the Ministry of Education (MoE) to facilitate preparations. However, the date for the reopening of schools has yet to be announced.

The SOP on the MoE’s website states that the attendance of students in phases starts with those who will be sitting for their examinations such as Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Vokasional Malaysia (SVM), Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM), including Special Needs Students (MBK).

It further said that students other than those in the above categories need not go to school as yet. They are to continue their home-based learning until further notice.

On the need to pay attention to, and address the mental health of students, Fatimah said, “Some students might be anxious about their studies and the coming examinations while being worried about Covid-19 when attending lessons.”
