Ahmad Ibrahim elected Dewan Negara Senator

DATUK Ahmad Ibrahim has been elected as the Senator of the Dewan Negara representing Sarawak.

The re-election would see the 53-year-old replacing outgoing Senator Datuk Zaidi Suhaili following the expiry of his current term on July 19.

His election was proposed by Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah (GPS-Asajaya) and seconded by Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn (GPS-Tarat).

“I give my thanks to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and to all GPS state representatives for electing me as Senator of the Dewan Negara.

“I was informed of this only a couple of days ago and it still comes as a shock to me. I vow to give it my best in light of this opportunity,” he said when met on the sidelines of the DUN sitting here on Wednesday (May 18).

Abdul Karim said he was confident that Ahmad would be able to serve his first term with dedication and honour.

Citing Ahmad’s experiences, Abdul Karim said he had a professional career in stock trading and commercial banking for a number of years before venturing into the world of politics.

“He is also quite skilled in administration, business and even politics.

“Apart from being the Padawan Municipal Council deputy chairman, Ahmad is also actively involved in non-governmental organisations such as the Sarawak United National Youth Organisation.”

Abdul Karim pointed out that Ahmad had also served as Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) exco member for one term and was also the head of Batu Kawah PBB for 13 years.

“He’s also very much involved in local sports development, martial arts and automotive sports associations.”
