ZHEJIANG, China: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the way of the future.

In China, the AI industry is mushrooming. One such establishment is the AI Town, completed in 2017.

Located in the core area of Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City (Overseas High Level Talents Innovation Park), the AI Town is one of four Future Sci-Tech cities, covering an area of 3.43 square kilometres.

Currently, the block of AI town covers a floor area of 220,000 square metres.

The AI Town focuses on attracting technology industry such as in the field of robotics, smart wearable devices, drones, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), design and development of new-generation chips based on big data, cloud computing and Internet of Things (IoT) and other formats to form a high-end AI industry cluster with strong international and regional cooperation.

As a highland of innovation and entrepreneurship of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City has formed an Entrepreneurial ‘New Fourth Army’ represented by four groups — Alibaba, Zhejiang University, overseas high-level talents and Zhejiang merchants.

It has held 10 batches of projects and reviews which attracted 17 high-end research and development (R&D) institutions and 467 innovative projects including the Zhejiang Lab, Alibaba-Zhejiang University Joint Research Institute of Frontier Technologies, Baidu (Hangzhou) Innovative Centre and China-Ukraine AI Industry Centre.

The AI Town is also attached to the core area of Hangzhou west branch large corridor, which is the most important area in the 13th five-year plan for science and technology innovation of Zhejiang Province.

For Sarawak, the development of digital technology and AI industry is indeed important as it leapfrogs to the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0).

Hence, the Sarawak government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has taken the lead to transform the state’s economy into digital economy and to ensure the state has 5G technology.

Abang Johari has also placed emphasis on training the right human resources needed in AI as the state strives to achieve high income status by 2030.
