JOHOR BAHRU: The air quality in most areas of Pasir Gudang was normal this morning, according to Johor Health, Environment and Agriculture Committee chairman Dr Sahruddin Jamal.
“As of now, it (air quality) is normal. We will have the assistance of the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Johor Chemistry Department to monitor the air quality in Pasir Gudang,” he told a press conference at 10am yesterday at the operations centre of the Johor Disaster Aid Management Committee at Menara Aqabah, here.
Dr Sahruddin said the air quality reading can change according to the weather, wind direction and rain.
He was replying to a question on the air quality following the air pollution in Pasir Gudang since March 7 due to toxic fumes emanating from chemical waste dumped into Sungai Kim Kim.
As of 8 pm yesterday, 947 people, many of whom were students, had been treated in hospital for inhalation of the toxic fumes.
Yesterday, the Education Ministry ordered the indefinite closure of all the 111 schools in Pasir Gudang. –Bernama
