KUCHING: Sarawak is ready to introduce a new technique to produce biofuels that uses algae or moss plants, with the active participation of local communities.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni said that the project will involve growing algae in translucent water tanks, allowing sunlight to enter.

With the right conditions, like suitable weather, seawater, and carbon dioxide, the algae can grow quickly.

In just three days, it can double in size if there’s enough light and good weather.

He said this during the Maal Hijrah Festival 2023 closing ceremony at Masjid Jamek Sarawak yesterday.

Dr. Hazland added that the market price of algae is high, reaching RM3,000 per kilogram.

According to him, to start this initiative, the first project will be carried out in Gedong.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to launch the project in the coming months.

Abang Johari has previously highlighted the potential of Gedong and Simunjan districts to become prominent areas for cultivating algae or moss for biofuel production. He said that this initiative will indirectly benefit the state by boosting fuel production and improving the local economy.
