KUCHING: The Triso ferry point tragedy on New Year’s Day could have been avoided if all the parties concerned had emphasised safety.

Alliance for Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said there must be barriers to prevent vehicles from entering the ferry when it is full.

“The barrier serves as a roadblock to ensure that there are no vehicles at the ferry ramp after it is full,” he said.

He said drivers too must be careful whenever they use a ferry.

Lee also expressed his sadness over the loss of many lives and extended his condolences to the victims’ families.

“I hope that both the federal and state governments will consider building bridges across the big rivers in Sarawak.

“Once there are bridges, ferry services won’t be needed anymore. They will be safer for the public,” he said.
