Following the imposition of the MCO, the Kapit passenger boat terminal has been relatively quiet.

SIBU: Since the Malaysian government enacted the movement control order (MCO) in an attempt to curb the spread of Covid-19 on Wednesday, express boat operators for the Kapit-Song-Sibu route have been slowing down their operations.

According to Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) Kapit officer-in-charge Jerry Lenggir John Andrew, they had to do so to avoid losses.

“This decision is made by the operators themselves and has nothing to do with SRB.

“I learn that they are unable to continue operating as usual as the number of passengers is decreasing.

“Therefore, members of the public who wish to use the express boat services are advised to plan their trips according to the new operating hours,” he said when contacted by reporters yesterday.

Jerry added that passengers who had booked their tickets online or made purchases at the counter could contact their respective express boat operators or visit the counters directly.

In the meantime, the SRB in cooperation with the divisional health office will continue to conduct health screening on express boat passengers.

“I urge members of the public to always maintain their personal hygiene by washing their hands frequently with soap and water or using a hand sanitiser.

“Apart from that, practise social distancing (stay at least 1m from other people) and stay at home if you don’t have any urgent matters,” Jerry said.
