KUCHING: The Semarak Uniti Keluarga Malaysia programme held at the State Library aims to foster unity and togetherness in line with Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia.

The event was held simultaneously throughout Malaysia with the hope of rekindling the spirit of patriotism and nationalism among the community.

New Sarawak Tribune met with the participants of the programme to share their thoughts on the spirit of independence among the people.

It is amazing that we in Sarawak have a diversity of races, but can still live peacefully and harmoniously. In terms of unity, it can be seen that our people are always united to ensure the well-being of one another is well cared for, regardless of the community’s background.

This programme is a platform to strengthen our relationships with one another, especially in families and communities. In addition, it can also increase the spirit of unity among the people while igniting the spirit of nationalism in them. For that, I am sure that through this programme, it will be able to emphasise the importance of independence to young children and its value.

Our effort to decorate cars with flags is not just to show that independence day is approaching, but aims to ignite the spirit of patriotism and remind ourselves of the struggle of national figures before independence. Through this effort, it is hoped that the spirit of patriotism among the community can be nurtured and strengthened throughout life .

In my opinion, children need to be exposed to the meaning of independence from an early age. That is why I brought my children here to celebrate and experience the atmosphere of independence that is approaching. Through this programme, it is clear that the community here is united because even though we come from different races, everyone can still sit in one place and socialise.

I personally think that programmes such as this need to be continued and maintained in order to have an impact on future generations. It is important for the young generation who are in the ‘curiosity’ stage, while they learn what the meaning of independence is. As such, I hope that this programme will be held more often and not only during the month of independence to remember the struggle of previous figures.
