KUCHING: The National Month celebration and flying of the Jalur Gemilang every year is aimed at generating the spirit of patriotism among the diverse communities in the country.

Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said every Malaysian in general and Sarawakians in particular need to remember the three important dates on the formation of an independent Malaysia in order to give rise to the spirit of patriotism.

“The independence we enjoy today is the result of negotiations and cooperation between previous leaders,” he said while officiating at the Merdeka@Komuniti programme in Kampung Telaga Air this morning.

“Always stick to the Rukun Negara because the Rukun Negara itself is a national ideology in bringing forth mutual respect, courtesy, tolerance, responsibility and other noble values that can be expressed in daily work,” he added.

Therefore, he called on the people here to always defend the independence that they enjoy and to always live in a state of peace and harmony with the plural society.
