BALINGIAN: Balingian assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi hopes that political parties and their supporters would always adopt healthy politics although their ideologies are different.

The one-term assemblyman expressed his hope ahead of the coming state election which will be held this year or next year before the current state legislative assembly term expires in June 2021.

He said sensitive issues such as race, religion, customs and others should not be used in obtaining support.

“This is to safeguard the existing harmony we have been enjoying for so many years,” he said at a Community Engagement @Balingian programme at a community hall here on Wednesday (July 29).

The former Dalat and Mukah District Council (MDDM) walikota also hoped that social media such as Facebook, Youtube and others should not be misused to disrupt the existing racial harmony and unity in Sarawak.

On the event, he said it provided an opportunity for people’s representatives, with the support of agencies to inform the people about the development plan and certain measures needed to expedite economic development.

Abdul Yakub also explained that for projects under the rural transformation programme (RTP), the implementation was based on certain criteria and priority.

Therefore, he advised the people to be patient if they had applied for the projects, but not yet approved or implemented.

The half-day event, organised by Mukah District Office and Balingian Sub-District Office, was attended by 112 community leaders comprising ketua masyarakat and ketua kaum in Balingian constituency.

The goal of the programme was to expose community leaders to current issues, while one of its objectives was to empower them who subsequently, would help to share the knowledge acquired with others under their jurisdiction.

The programme featured talks by Housing Development Commission (HDC), Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Mukah Branch and Land and Survey Department Mukah Division, followed by question and answer session. Exhibition by agencies was also held.

Mukah district officer Shafrie Saili, MDDM secretary Yong Ing Chu, MDDM deputy walikota councillor Jay Keram and Ismail Kasah who represented the Resident’s Office also attended the event.
