LABUAN: The Labuan Division of Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) is scheduled to convene a meeting on Feb 24 to elect its committee members.

The Amanah Labuan Division pro-tem committee set the date after the Registrar of Societies (RoS) gave the approval to hold the elections before March.

The division has a total of 66 branches, established in November and December last year.

Amanah Federal Territory secretary Ismail Yahaya told Bernama the branches would elect the 15 divisional committee members who, in turn, will elect the divisional chief.

Ismail said the party elections should be held democratically, allowing members to elect leaders whom they feel could bring the party to greater heights.

“We have a strategy of ensuring the party elections are held smoothly in accordance with the party’s rules and regulations,” he said.

Ismail stressed that the party elections would help unite the members and, together with the party central leadership, enable them to move in the same direction.

“Undoubtedly, there will always be challenges when we are unifying the members, but they will come under one roof eventually,” he said.

Several Amanah Labuan branch heads confided in Bernama the existence of two factions in the Labuan division, but the party’s central leadership is optimistic it would not affect the whole structure.

Amanah spread its wings to Labuan in June last year and has received an overwhelming response from the people on the island since.
