BENTONG: Datuk Amizar Abu Adam, Bentong Umno committee member, is the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Pelangai state by-election on Oct 7.

Pahang BN chairman Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail made the announcement here yesterday.

“We as party members need to help our friend (Amizar) to win in Pelangai.

“There are 3,040 Umno members in Pelangai, so I hope party members will work hard, can get at least 90 per cent of our members out to vote. Please continue to give support so that our candidate will win big,” he said.

Also present were Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, Amanah president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) president Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon and MIC vice-president Datuk M Asojan.

Wan Rosdy, who is Pahang Menteri Besar, expressed hope that the Pelangai by-election will put an end to the so-called ‘green wave’ phenomenon.

“What we saw in the last state elections, especially in Terengganu, Kelantan and Kedah being associated with this green wave, so let’s end it here,” he said.

Meanwhile, Amizar who hails from Felda Chemomoi which is located in the Pelangai state constituency said he will do his best to translate the party’s mandate and trust to him in the form of victory in the by-election.

“I will strive for victory, I want to continue the legacy of the late Datuk Seri Johari Harun,” said Amizar who holds a Master’s degree in Strategic Management and Leadership from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

The Election Commission has fixed Oct 7 as polling day for the Pelangai state by-election, following the death of Johari, 53, who was one of the 10 victims of the plane crash in Shah Alam, Selangor on Aug 17.

Nomination and early voting for the by-election have been fixed on Sept 23 and Oct 3 respectively.

Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional (PN) has once again chosen Bentong PAS deputy president Kasim Samat as its candidate for the by-election.

PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man announced Kasim as PN’s candidate, stating that all component parties had agreed to it.

“The party (PAS) received a list of three candidates – we discussed it in the syura council and agreed that all three were qualified.

“We discussed who was the best, and we looked at who was closest to voters. A candidate from Pelangai, someone who lives here,” he said during the candidate announcement held at Simpang Pelangai last night.

Kasim, 62, had contested the Pelangai state seat during the 15th general election and lost to Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Seri Johari Harun with a majority of 4,048 votes.

A former secondary school and matriculation college teacher, Kasim said he was grateful to be entrusted with the task of contested by the PN leadership.
