KUCHING: Tan Sri Dr Kamal Mat Salih has earned respect from Sarawakians for his decision to resign as Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) chairman.

“Sarawakians salute Kamal. With his impressive credentials, he will be an asset to whichever university in Malaya that is lucky to get him.

“He is a gentleman and we wish him all the best in his future undertakings,” said State Reform Party (STAR) president Lina Soo yesterday, commenting on the recent controversy of a non-Sarawakian appointed as Unimas chairman.

Soo was equally impressed with how Sarawakians had come together to address the matter, and she congratulated them, saying that “it shows that if they are united to protect and defend Sarawak rights, they will triumph.”

On Monday, Kamal resigned following criticism over his appointment to the post, replacing Tan Sri Sulong Matjeraie, whose term is due to end in April 2021.
