Angler missing in Miri waters

MIRI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has activated a search and rescue (SAR) operation for a local man who was reported missing while fishing in the waters of Miri since Friday.

Sarawak Maritime director, First Maritime Admiral Robert Teh Geok Chuan said the operation to search for Wong Nge Hui, 41, had started at 4.30 pm yesterday after his father had lodged a report.

“Wong Nge Hui was last seen wearing a brown shirt and riding a fibre-glass boat that was blue and white in colour as he was departing from the Kampung Muhibah jetty, Kuala Baram,” he said in a statement today.

According to information from the victim’s father, his son frequently went fishing to the Baronia Platform area, 27 nautical miles north-west of Miri.

“The search covered an area which is 132 nautical square miles,” he said adding that anyone who has information on the case are asked to contact the Sarawak Maritime operations centre at telephone number 082-432544 which operates 24 hours or MERS 999. – Bernama
