The vehicles that went up in flames following an act of arson.

BETONG: A man torched several vehicles at a petrol station following after being accused of not paying for his fuel at Jalan Sie Meng Chan yesterday.

A spokesperson from the State Fire and Rescue Department said the department received a report of the incident at 8.53am, and shortly after firefighters from the Betong fire station were deployed.

However, when they arrived the fire had been doused by volunteers although a car and two motorcycles were badly damaged.

The team was informed that a man who went berserk lit up the vehicles after being accused of not paying for his petrol purchase by an employee of the station.

The suspect was then handed over to the police.

A police report had also been lodged following the incident.

Separately, swift response by the residents of Tuai Rumah Besi Longhouse, Jalan Kanowit Durin managed to put out a fire caused by a short circuit.

Firefighters from Kanowit fire station were rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 8.10pm on Thursday.

Initial investigation by firefighters found the main switch in one of the rooms of the 22-door longhouse had caught fire.

Firefighters made a comprehensive inspection of the longhouse before they returned to base.
