KUCHING: Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had done its best particularly in tackling the spread of Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

He said that this included speeding up the Covid-19 Immunisation Programme which had already shown results.

“However, I am little bit upset that despite the PN government’s strong commitment and determination in dealing with the pandemic and helping the people, the eighth prime minister had to face the political pressure of power struggle, which forced him to decide to step down,” he said on Monday (Aug 16) following the resignation of Muhyiddin and his Cabinet.

Fadillah, who is also the Petra Jaya MP, expressed his appreciation and extended his gratitude to Muhyiddin who had given him the confidence and trust to be Senior Minister of Infrastructure leading the Ministry of Works from March 10 last year.

“While leading the Ministry of Works for the first time from 2013 to 2018 and the second time from March 10 last year to Aug 16 this year, I have tried my best to implement the trust given as best as possible for the welfare of the people and the country.

“I hope that any Works Ministers who will be appointed after this will continue all projects that have been approved and planned for the welfare of the people, just as the PN government continued all projects that have been approved by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government that had ruled for 22 months before this,” he said.

He also stressed that the country must not make the people the victims of prolonged political crises and frequent changes of government. Whatever promised projects to the people must be continued.

“I would like to thank all the staff and agencies under my ministry who have given me good cooperation throughout my leadership of the ministry.

“I also want to apologise if there are any shortcomings during my tenure and I pray that the Ministry of Works continues to thrive and excel under the new leadership in the future,” he said.

On Muhyiddin’s resignation, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chief whip said that his decision was based on Article 43 (4) of the Federal Constitution after losing the confidence of the majority of the MPs.

“GPS thanks the Yang di-Pertuan Agong who has agreed that Muhyiddin will carry out his duties as the caretaker prime minister until a new prime minister is appointed. We uphold parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy,” said Fadillah.
