SIBU: The Federation of Associations of Taiwan Universities Alumni Malaysia (Fatuam) has been advised to appeal to the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) and the Health Ministry to recognise dental degrees from seven Taiwan universities.

Former director general of Health Tan Sri Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman gave the advice to members of Fatuam and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) education bureau who visited him in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 4.

Dr Abu Bakar had led representatives of Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) and Malaysian Pharmacy Council (MPC) to conduct accreditation exercises on the Taiwanese medical, dental and pharmacy courses when he was director general of the Health.

According to SUPP Dudong branch chief Wong Ching Yong, Dr Abu Bakar was surprised to learn that the dental degrees from seven Taiwan universities were not duly gazetted and the failure had caused hardships and anguish to Taiwan dental graduates since 2016.

On September 4, 2019, the chairman of SUPP education bureau Datuk Ding Kuang Hiing and Fatuam members also visited former Health Minister Chua Jui Ming who confirmed that the dental degrees of seven dental schools in Taiwan were already recognised in 1996 when he was the Health Minister.
